My 406 90bhp HDI 2001 has done 55,000 miles and I have started to notice a noise that appears to be coming from the front of the car but only when I get up to about 60mph, its a sort of droaning type road noise, the tyres were replaced in october last year so i don't think its them. I have knocked it out of gear and turned engine off but noise stays until drop below say 50mph, also if touch brakes noise doesn't change - any ideas? :?:

I didn't think it could be tyres as they were replaced back in october and the noise has started about 3 weeks ago (also noticed by the missus so I can't be hearing things!).

I had a similar problem recently, sounded like a bearing or drive-shaft problem, happened about 60mph or on a roundabout?

Mechanic couldn't find anything wrong, then out of desperation I went to another mechanic who found a tyre to be out of round.

It cost me two new tyres, but well worth it.

Try using your spare on each corner in turn and see if there is any improvement.

Sounds like a wheel bearing ,does it get louder on fast bends , eg loud on a rh its a ns bearing and vice versa ,a rear bearing will change sound if you pull on the handbrake slightly.

I had a strange droning noise that seemed to be comming from the front offside
it was the bottom pully a common fault i am told

And may I say, if it turns out to be the bottom pulley? a bloody expensive problem :!: :!: I know from bitter experience and I offer a prayer to the 406 GOD on your behalf that its not that. :frown:

I get a droning noise around 40mph, thought it was wheel bearing, doesn't seem to be. Then i though it was rear brake sticking, fix them and still have the noise. I am putting it down to either tyre noise, or brake pads at certain speed.

i am not concerned about it thou.

Just a quick thought, would the driveshaft intermediate bearing cause this noise ?

Also, is it perhaps remotely possible that it's belt related ( cam or aux ) - ie a bearing ?
