the lower compression engine was mainly found in 605's and xm's
not 100% correct
if using the lower comp bottom end (turbo) there is no need for the decomp plates thats already catered for.
the xu9 crank will increase stroke from 86mm to 88mm this increases displacement to 2045cc, however the main benefit you get is deck height improving squish and combustion process.
on the stock engine the deck height is 1mm below deck when engine is atdc this means at TDC the piston is 1mm below being level with the top of the cylinder.
when you add the 88mm stroke crank you bring the deck height to 0 (1mm extra travel at top of cylinder 1mm extra at bottom) this means that your also increasing compression ratio to about 9.5:1 which is really getting a bit high for a turbo application unless your going to be VERY hot on your mapping. Also when stroking you MUST hone the cylinders you 100,000 mile engine will have steps where it has never traveled over that extra 2mm of cylinder before and if you do not hone it out then your piston rings will last a few minutes
you could use a decomp plate to bring this back to 8.5:1 but then it removes your squish area and for all this effort you have gained 45cc, not worth it the way to get around this is custom forged pistons but since your doing custom pistons you may aswell bore out to 87mm since forgies need a rebore anyway due to different coeffecient of expansion(this is why engines with forged internals sound crap and rattle like hel when cold).
as for going to 88mm is a bit ropey even though hiflow do it you get very thin cylinder walls>water jackets and oil ways not recommended,
and if your doing this you may aswell go the whole hog and use the 92mm stroke xud11 crank which comes forged from the factory this will give you 2188cc or 2.2l
this is what my next build will be

ill probably be using some forged rods from an american v8 modified for the pug (been done before ad works out v cheap) + i have a mill and lathe turning up for my workshop next month.
i wouldn't use the gti6 head by choice either the s16 head is the best for turbo application, t16 engine owners who want to tune regularly swap for the s16 cams and since the t16 and s16 heads are the same, why not:P
i wanted to get an s16 head myself but there was not one around
