As I am planning on a remap and rolling road session soo I thought I would give BP Ultimate Diesel a go for a few days beforehand to see if it makes any difference.

It claims to have a higher cetane rating, makes the engine quieter, is better for the environment and cleans your engine. At 6p per litre extra, I would hope the differences are marked. At an average of 50 MPG, it would have to increase the distance by 3.1 MPG just to cover the additional cost!

BP also claim that the benefits can take time to show, I presume because the carbon build ups and injectors take a while to clean?

Anyway, on to my findings;

It has been a cold few days so the car is more responsive anyway but I 'feel' there may be a slight increase in power and decrease in engine noise but this may be a placebo effect. I tried a 'sensible' drive to work this morning over fast A-Roads, this is approx 35 miles and I can normally average 53.2 MPG if I take it steady. And guess what MPG I acheived this morning with a tank full of Ultimate?

I'm trying Asda premium 95RON this week because it's cheaper than BP's standard offering. So far I'm not impressed.

I drove to work yesterday at 3am and had a "perfect" run - indicated 60mph constant with trucks to slipstream almost all the way and minimal stopping once off the motorway. With BP standard fuel I'd be looking at over the 50mpg mark for the whole trip.

Adsa premium? 40.2MPG! I only averaged 42MPG on the motorway!

Today I drove in light traffic and managed a disgusting 34.5!

Yeah I couldn't get to sleep Monday night so when it hits about 1am I need to make a decision to be late/ill or to have a shower and drive in at stupid o'clock without sleep. I've just not been able to beat 40.2MPG this week. On the way home I've been hitting around 34MPG which is about where I'd get when I was pretty much dragging my rear wheels along before...

When I first fitted the computer, yeah. I've always brimmed the tank out of habit through religiously calculating my MPG by hand before I fitted the trip computer. Heck when I first got this job I pretty much had it brimmed every single day so I could work out the cheapest way to drive

How accurate is the compooter?

Shockingly very accurate. It generally over-reports by about 0.3mpg (unless it ain't just my radiator that's leaking!). Average speed is actually bang on in agreement with a GPS device too, unlike the dash speedo.

Usually I'm at about 310-315 miles by the time the fuel gauge hits half way. This week - 268! My car does not like this Asda wee!

My phase 1 1.9TD liked ultimate much more than my phase 2 HDi. the 1.9 would go much better and further on Ultimate where my HDi is happy on Shell or Asda, with no real difference on Ultimate, but that maybe because the HDi is running a remap ECU, I don't know.

I have always been told to stay clear of supermarket fuels. As many years ago supermarket fuel was around 5p a litre cheaper. Guess what? some offer it now if you spend £50 or more so nothing really has changed apart from there profits. I was always lead to believe that if you imagine a big vat holding fuel say around 5000 litres your premium brands like shell, bp , esso would use say around 3000 litres so the remainder would be 2000 which would what was left with all the sedement that had settled at the bottom. Thats why supermarket fuel was cheaper it was a poor grade with lots of nice bits to clog up fuel filters. Esso shell bp obviously add there own additives etc.. To give there claimed improvements. I have also tried bp ultimate but have been using shell diesel for the last year and would not ever put any other fuel in my car. Bp in my opinion is expensive for the very little improvement you get. On the other hand shell diesel claims to the same job with no extra cost so its shell all the way for me and also they have introduced a drivers club card which you get money off your fuel so you cant really loose with the shell diesel extra.

I'm very much stilla Shell V-Power man!

Makes the car more responsive and faster, quieter but one downside it gives me less mpg due to my heavy right foot.

Soon so I have been told by my local garage. It will replace Shell normal diesel.

No doubt when they introduce it, it will be used as an excuse to increase the price per litre at the same time :O(

On the pumps where i live you can only buy shell diesel extra which is the same price as dieselat every pump thats what i use. Are you saying they are replacing it and it will be more expensive?
