hdi 90 running problem + Air-con problem

Post by robconnors1977 »

Hello, i have 2 annoying problems aparant on my 406 hdi 90.

1 - This problem happens intermittantly, and seems to happen either during the warm up stage or on a motorway run, - i was on the motorway doing approx 60 mph, tried to accelerate and the engine just seemed to hold back before accelerating, - it also did this when i was driving up a slight incline the other day at 40 - tried to accelerate and it just would not do anything, just holds back, strange cos it is so intermittant. The car is a taxi and i use it for 12 hours a day. It can happen in the first hour then fine for the next 12, or even next week!!. Any one got any ideas. (car has bosch system)

2 - Air-con intermittantly not working. - Stopped working last year so i had it regassed, now works but when it wants too - Turn a/c on - compressor kicks in but then stops after 10 secs - However if cooling fans come on the compressor kicks in and all works till cooling fans go off then a/c stops again? - cant work it out?

Your 'flat spot' sounds like possibly a throttle position sensor, vac pump (not operating the turbo waste gate), maybe MAF meter (rare), or some other sensor for the ECU.

A code read may be in order?

The a/c problem could be the front mounted cooling fan (these wear out and pull large currents), the fan relays/resisters mounted up front can give trouble. Maybe even low on gas again?

See what others say too...........

Trouble is the holding back problem does not put the management light on, so guess that there would be no fault stored. Interestingly it is def during the warm up period that it does it and not for long, also it seems to only hold back below 3000 rpm - once it gets to 3k it pulls well again.

Not too sure on a/c but i had the gas level rechecked and it was ok?

Thanks for your help.

Just an update running problem due to air mass meter faulty, so had that replaced and all ok.

Total bill for replacement including new rear discs / pads and handbrake shoes £200-66 fitted so not too bad i think. Incidentally mass meter was £15 cheaper from citroen. ironic considering its the same part in the same box with the same part number!!!

Luckily for me the bloke i use is a friend of a friend of a friend who works as a manager at a local independant bosch garage. Even more luckily he used to be a peugeot tech. But any way as he is the manager he does my car when he can, ie i drop it off at 8 collect at 5 and he fits it in around his day, the plus side being his labour charge to me was only £55. The air meter from peugeot was £85 - But citroen was listed at £5 cheaper plus they gave me discount as i work for a taxi firm, so the part came in at £74.73 inc. Incidentally the part from citroen was in a peugeot box.

Happily though the car is all sorted. Ironic though cos i only thought a fault code would be logged if the management light came on (it never did) - But obviously not!!

Right HELP - used the car for 200 miles last night and it still partially has a problem, though not the same as before. It now holds back in fourth gear when trying to accelerate - Put foot down car holds back, but as soon as revs hit 2k it fine and performs as normal. Is ok in all other gears - dont understand it unless perhaps new air-flow meter is faulty?? - .

Before it would hold back in 2nd/3rd/4th gear and be ok when it hit 2500 rpm - Now it is only 4th gear.

When the garage replaced the mas meter does it need any programing to the car - also is there any way of testing the meter. Also no management light appears

Fault is intermittant - happened about 5 times in 12 hours, though seems to happen more directly after car has been left to idle for a while - ie when parked up waiting for a job!!
