Most 'modern-ish' TD's can be mapped if they have electronic control of the fuelling/turbo.
The 2.1 td can be remapped.
My missus old 318tds can be remapped.
I don't think you can remap an old 1.9td in the 405's.
Common rail is just an advanced high pressure system for more efficient use of the Diesel fuel really. Most pre-common rail Diesels have electronic control and can be remapped.

i see so even pre common rail engines such as the 2.1 will still be controlled by a master ecu?

only diesel engines that have distributor pumps with full electronic control, i.e. total fuel quantity etc.
i.e. PSA 2.1 td 110, VAG 1.9 tdi 110 or 90, BMW 2.5 tds or 1.9 tds
any common rail can be remapped with the exception of a few, such as the PSA HDi's with siemens fuel system

the bmw must have been fairly ahead of their time were they as real early ones could be chipped, why not siemens common rail then?
