Rear wheel bearings

Post by RyanO »

What's the story with the rear wheel bearings? I believe the bearing cannot be bought seperate and you can only buy the rear hub complete. R970 each only from the stealership (approx 70pounds each).
Is this just the French trying to be funny again.

I haven't had a good look at the rear hub, but is it not possible to just replace the bearing, like on any other normal car.

I think you can only replace the hub assembly.

Are you sure the bearings are worn? sometimes the rear discs/pads can make a similar noise when the caliper is seized.

Thing is I'm not sure its the bearings. The 'noise' I'm hearing is unlike other wheel bearing noise I've experienced.
It's more pronounced/audible on a smooth road surface. I was convinced it was the tyres so I put the original wheels back, but that made no difference. It almost sounds like wind noise, just can't put my finger on it.

I jacked the rear wheels up and there is zero play on the wheel bearings and they still roll to a stop smoothly.

I will be replacing the ARB rubber mounts when they finally arrive from Outer Mongolia, at the same time I need to check the rear brakes and will have a poke around.

Rear discs would be nice but mine has drums ala SL.
