Best thing to do is to get a diagnostic check done which should tell you exactly what the fault is. Could possibly be fuel pump issues maybe.

If your 406 came with a Manuel then that should tell you what the light is.

This problem could be a number of things best person to ask is James. My guess: -

Possible the accelerator potion senor is broken.

or the lift pump is gone (in which case you will find broken bit's of it in the fuel filter housing other than that talk to James I am sure the boards resident expert may have an idea.

Worst case the HDI main pump has gone (lots of money)

If the indicator light that looks like a tap is on the lower left side of the dash its
warning of water in the fuel.... i think there is a drain plug at the bottom of the fuel filter housing
that you can use to drain it off ....

There is a lift pump in the tank and the main high pressure pump. The tank pump is there to supply the high pressure pump, I expect that sucking fuel from the tank and well as pressuring the fuel rail to silly pressure would be too much for high pressure pump.

The tank pump is know to fail, sending bits of metal through the fuel system. Which are not good for the (very expensive) high presure pump and injectors.

You may just have a lot of water in the fuel filter or you low presure pump might have gone. I would be draining and opening the fuel filter to check for any signs of metal bits. I would be doing these pretty quick too (like no using the car till i'd done it quick)!

The fuel filter housing is a real pain to open and refit the lid, basically you need a large spanner on the top and twist its off, after removing the pipes. Putting it back on is worse because you have to get it lined up correctley and then turn it that hard you think its going break.

If there are bits of metal, you will need a new lift pump, filter and housing and to clean the fuel lines.

the former owner had the pumo in the tank replaced which i think also incorporates the fuel gauge sender unit think it was about £200 or so, where is the high pressure pump located and what price are they??

high pressure pump is on the engine at the front on the left, its driven of the cam belt (if it fails it can take the cambelt with it!). Betwwen engine and power steering pump.

I think they are around £1000 new, probably get second hand or recon bit cheaper.

FYI injectors are about £250 each from the stealers.

No! You're almost guaranteed to break it if you do it in situ, and possibly injure yourself too!

Disconnect the fuel lines, which have QR connectors, remove the whole cannister and either (very carefully) put the top in a vice (easy with the hex shaped lids) or put an oil filter trap wrench on it. you'll still need strong wrist though.

I reckon it will be the lift pump, just don't drive it or you are in danger of killing the main pump. The lift pump will cost you about £90 and a few hours labour if that. then it should be ok.

mine was about £200, but that was a couple of years ago so they may have come down a bit such as the crankshaft pulley if peugeot realise theres a common fault they shoul reduce there prices again
