Hi,
Just thinking why in god’s name did Peugeot not put a pre – filter in just after the lift pump, which could serve as two vital roles.
1) Do some filtering
2) More importantly stop and detect a lift pump failure, this seems too me a very cheap solution to the lift pump problem.
Back on topic James, did Peugeot make a reliably lift pump if so what is the part number? If not what can be done to prevent this from happening?
Keep a full tank of fuel (for example), change it each week (LOL) Or just hope it does not go.

I do tend to keep my above half a tank and not put in supermarket fuel, but really its just pot luck if/when lift pump fails!

Yes it is pot luck. Mine has done 142,000 on the original pump. Guess its a matter of time beofre it goes, needless to say i do inspect the fuel filter bowl regularly.
Quite funny, i remember from my days of when i worked for peugeot when the hdi first came out, one particular car would go through lift pumps every 10k. Turns out the guy worked for a construction company and was using plant fuel which was full of silt. Needless to say once he stopped using theat fuel his car was fine.
I always remember the peugeot master tech saying 'The hdi engine is very fuel critical!!' in order to run as it should!!

When you say you 'inspect the fuel bowl' do you drain some off from the drain tap?
It is a shame though, I wouldn't mind too much if the lift pump failed and £200.00 sorted it. But it's the worry of all the metal bits and whether you flushed then out properly. And of course the lift pump is an arse to get too
