Air Con info needed

Post by puggy »

this is mainly directed at D9 owners with digital climate control... just had a/c pipes
replaced and re gassed and question is does your compressor engage every time you
press the a/c button or are there times perhaps when the climate control deems it
uneccessary that it does not engage....

HI,

From what i remember from my old car every time i pressed the a/c button to turn it on or off i could always here the clicking of the a/c going on and off, the only time the a/c will not come on is when the outside temperature is below 3 degrees ( i think). My new 2001 car I cannot hear the clicking of the a/c engaging but the air con works fine. Hope this helps.

Worst case the a/c clutch mechanism is on the way out or maybe the temperature sensor is knackered (although you multi functional display would be showing the wrong temperature) other than that I have no idea.

My compressor appears to have a life of it's own. Then again I leave the climate on Auto at 21deg pretty much all year 'round, so the thing switches itself on and off as it needs to.... :?

I have studied my compressor many many times and have come to the conclusion that it does the following:
  • 0 deg C or less = no compressor (protection)
1 to 10 deg C = compressor engages on and off in cycles to suit gas pressure
11 deg C and above = compressor runs flat out no stopping
Mines always done this. I was worried about it running flat out but it seems fine like it.

The only thing I have not tried is the auto-off function which disengages the compressor under high loads (revs) I daren't try this one :|

Thanks welly :P i have used the auto off at 70+ and the compressor
quite happily disengages ... though if you try it and anything happens
i deny all responsibility as i was not encouraging you to do the same :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy:

Well i think its when you press the minus sign on the fan button
until everything is turned off so that auto or a/c are no longer
showing on the display.... think thats what welly means Dai :P

Nooooooo, the ECU will turn off the a/c under high engine loads to free up some more power.

If your running high revs/boost/fuelling/temps for an extended period the a/c will be switched off automatically.

As I said, I daren't try this.

I don't know about you but I never engage the compressor at any revs higher than about 2000 rpm. I just don't like the idea of it banging in at high revs.

TBH I think it's more related to high coolant temps (a product of high loads) the ECU will shut the a/c down, you can come off the throttle a bit, the coolant should drop, and then your OK. If not then you will enter *phase II* of the overheating procedure
