KONCKING NOISE FROM FRONT SUSPENSION OR STEERING?
Hi have posted this problem a while ago now. Still have the problem and still not been resolved. The car is road legal, But only happens when we are above 19 degrees i get a knocking noise when turning the wheels and riding over bumps speed humps or bumps in the road. Has anyone else had this problem? Mine is a hdi which has covered 150k miles Cant say how long i have had this problem as it has only really been warm in 2006 and this year. Would not say the noise is getting worse jsut very annoying.
When i had knocking going over speed humps it was a front anti roll link (at about 145K). I would expect it to fail it's MOT for those, thou.
May be worth changing them on the off chance, they are only around £15 each and two nuts to fix. They are also most common failure on the front suspension.

On the whole pretty good, nice car to drive, fun when you are pushing them and good for long distance driving (and commuting) when your not.rapport25 wrote:What do you think about the 406 hdi's on the whole?
The HDI seams a decent engine it has a few know issues, e.g. low pressure pump, Dual mass flywheel, crankshaft pully. Providing they are looked after, miliage doesn't really effect how they drive. No one would guess my car had done 147k by just driving it, I could probably half it and people would believe it. I've driven a vectra with 97k (easy miles too) and that was much worse.
They are a little slow of the line, but once they are moving there are quite quick (well the 110). The pedal response is not like the VW TDI engines, where you touch the pedal and they shoot off.
Mine is pretty good on fuel around 53mpg on my commute.
On the whole i like the car and plan to keep mine for a few more years (hopefully till over 200k), just a shame i am going to have to have anew dual mass flywheel in the next few weeks. Will be an expensive job.

I don't think the drive shafts really go at any specific distance, more a case of the type of mileage and driving the car has been exposed to.
I don't think the extra BHP your car is running will be doing a lot to help them! Are one of the main bits between the engine and the drag of the wheels.

Must admit the car flys new clutch and flywheel have transformed the car no end. I use to get a lot of vibration through the front wheels when driving around 80 mph but that was obviously the inbalance wth the flywheel. Clutch is not heavy nice and light just the pick up feels very different to before. Sham i still have that noise. When driving on a smooth surface you dont hear it hit a bump or speed hump its there also when turning the steering wheel say to park or turn onto the drive its there but only when we are above 19 degrees you can hear it. Very embarasing when shopping people stare. Anyone else have some advice on possible causes and what to check? weather permitting i will be trying to get a better look underneath this w end. My friend fears the same as me steering rack
hope not have spent close to £900 and have tax and mot end of the month. Friend who is an mot inspector checked it over 3 weeks ago but he said its road legal. Just need to wait till something breaks

I am having this issue now, and I have also been told it may be the drive shaft. Going to have it checked out, did have the anti-roll bar links changed and this stopped the majority of the noise but I am now getting a knock when pressing the accelerator pedal. Its worse when going around 70mph.hucky
