newbie and a question!

Hi guys,

Just a quick intro - I'm Andy (duh!) and I recently bought a '98 FPSH 406 V6 executive in deep metallic blue from Tewkesbury car auctions for the princely sum of £400. She is straight as a die, leather absolutely immaculate, 109k miles on the clock (FPSH up to 106k miles) and I'm very happy so far!

I have just the one wee niggle tho - a slightly lumpy tickover. I'm guessing it's just the coil packs (similar faults on FTO's I've had in the past) but just wanting to put a feeler out there in case there is anything else obvious (and easy) to check first.

Many thanks for the great website btw :)

Here's a piccie :

Cheers,
Andy

Nice one mate.... V6 8)

Shame its a D8 :cheesy:

My V6 isint the smoothest tickover ive ever had in a car, slightly annoying i know when your sat in traffic and you can feel it shakeing the car a bit. But ive had my car nearly 2 years now and its been like it all the time so i wouldnt worry about it, oh and mines on 135k.

Only thing you want to worry about owning a V6 is throwing a grand at the garage thats gonner do the cambelt change   or you could do what i do and just hope and pray that it aint gonner snap :P

ooo a V6 8)
i hope you have deep pockets
as for the lumpy idle, its quite normal as they have rather wild cams as standard
one thing to check is that the coils are bolted down tight as they have a habit of working loose

roger wilco :) once I get the cover off the engine I'll have a looksee - lost my torx bits I think :?

Is the Haynes book of lies any good for a D8 V6?

Hi Andy!

Will the HT leads need replacing, normally this can effect the tickover, possibly due a plug change too?

My Mazda V6 was hunting slightly and a bit rough on tickover. New leads fixed it in a jiffy.

Used to have an FTO eh?

A bit like the one I/her indoors had:

Very nice. The chrome trim is interesting. Could this be a D8.5?

:? never knew there was such an animal! Only thing she lacks for toys is the trip computer, but I see there are some nice threads on here that I shall be raiding shortly for that.

Wellie - yes pretty much it :) I have had 2 tiptronic GR's - both lovely machines that should have kept, but money issues at the time meant that I've had to get rid :(

Mine was the GR manual :P

It met an untimely end when it was hit head on by a Lorry   just after I had done all the belts/tensioners and finally got the a/c sorted (you know what I'm on about here)

The FTO engine was pretty noisey I found and was rough (for a V6) your new puggy unit is a bit of a beast by all accounts. Yours will be the 194BHP with better low-down grunt.

You did well fella to bag that for 400 notes 8)

Yes couldn't believe it - we were after another 4x4, but got near the auction end and no one was interested in 3 or so 406's that came through. I spotted this one and didn't know too much about them to be honest, just the full service and 4 doors is all I saw. One other bidder other than me, and he gave up at £350. I nearly had it for £300 (the starting bid) but just as the hammer was going down the other chap decided I should be paying more! lol :x

Yes smoother engine than the hairy V6's, and I definitely think the '6 is faster too. Not through the bends though, I think the FTO would have the edge there.
