Peugeot Diesels will do very high mileages (like 400,000) BUT it is not without the expense of being *very* up to date with maintenance.

If you do motorway driving regularly you will be adding to the already high mileage. I would go for something with less than 150000 if it was me. If your stuck for money always try and buy an older car that has been cherished (but is otherwise almost worthless like sub £500.00) and get one that's had it's cambelt changed already.

Perhaps look on ebay/autotrader at the 406's the N/P/R reg ones are a bargain. The 2.1 Diesel is fantastic and will do monster mileages with very little problems.

At the same time a guy on here did 195,000 miles in his 2.0 petrol. And another Petrol Turbo owner is upto 170,000 with next to no expense whatsoever and good fuel economy (cheap to buy too).

The key thing is to choose carefully and pick one that's obviously been looked after.

Buying one with that many miles is a little bit of a gamble, It could be fine and easy do another 200k. But there again the fuel pump could fail or turbo go, you just don't know. The engines will go for ever pretty much, but every so often they will need an expensive repair (fuel pump, turbos, clutches etc).

If its got lots of history and you can see that its had the major expensive stuff done (clutch, fuel pump, maybe turbo) and been well looked after, then it may be good buy and do you well.

I think the sx is a pretty low spec model, so car would have to be very cheap for it to be worth while. Should be quite a few 406 DT around

The 406 can be a very cheap, very reliable and extremely comfortable car. You just need to get the right one... To start with, look at the radiator grille. If it's a horizontal bar it's the older D8 model which is generally accepted to be far more reliable than the newer D9s which can be identified by the black mesh grille. They're also cheaper.

276k miles isn't amazing for a 406 diesel but it's still fairly high. I reckon your best bet for reliability+price would be something 150-200k with a good service record (non-dealer or even just receipts would be fine) and a recent belt change. You'd probably be looking £500ish on ebay, have a poke on there and see how the cars offered compare against the one you're looking at.
