Engine starting problem - " Driving me round the bend!

Post by Old Smokey »

Hi everybody,
My 1.9TD is baffling us all. The problem is that upon starting the engine, the engine has to turn at least half a dozen times before it fires. OK i know what the usual suspects are. So i have taken the car to 2 "Diesel Specialists " to try & find the answer. We have tested the injectors & cleaned them.,tested everything heaterplug wise & put in a new set. The battery is new. The only comment that i had from one of them was that the "cranking speed " was a little slow, hence fitting a new heavy duty battery. The problem is constant, whether she,s cold or hot. It will eventually fire but even giving the plugs 2 or 3 warm ups makes no difference. Please anybody got any suggestions ? She,s my daily transport & i feel that one time she isn,t going to start. Any help appreciated Thanks.........

air seeping into the fuel line? when you turn over the engine, or pump the hand-primer (the rubber bulb thingy) can you see air in the pipeline between the fuel pump and fuel filter?
And if you do pump the handprimer before starting, does the car start quicker?

Failing that i'd be inclined to say that the insides of the pump are worn. Can you see any kind of fuel leak around the pump?
many miles on that motor?

Sometimes my car does this too but normally only when warm. First start of the day is straight away and if I drive abit stop for 10 mins and then start again, intermittantly it takes aout 5 turns to start as opposed to the normal two. I have new plugs ect but I reckon mine is fuel related as I get a bit of white smoke when she does this. Doesn't bother me though :)

Thanks for the ideas & likewise someone else is experiencing a similar problem. The engines done 160k, however she has had a new head gasket, skimof the head etc. While this job was being done i asked the diesel specialist to check for any compression problems or anything else that may need attention. She came up with a clean bill of health, he was impressed how good the engine was for that mileage. I think you guys are on the track in saying it,s pump/fuel related. Will have to do abit more investigation in that area i think. Will keep you posted of outcome if i can find the fault, it may well help somebody else with the same problem.......... :|

sounds like the fuel lines are sucking air, usually in the first minor stages it only affects hot starting then gets worse and eventually out right fails to start, try pumping the bleeder when cranking
when it runs do you get a bad case of diesel knock, as the internal pump seals may have failed or the advance regulator in the pump may have seized

No there,s no diesel knock, on firing, no excessive smoke - in fact bugger all ! to give us a clue to diagnose. Anyhow she,s back with the "specialist" again but i ,ll say this,he,s scratching his head on this one... :?:
