How do you know you are in "limp mode"

How do you know you are in limp home mode rather than just not working right, do you get a message or anything?

Engine light wil come on and it wont rev past about 2800 rpm with throttl hard to the floor and will also lack power

is it petrol or derv my one is in limp mode and it will pull but wont go above 3000rpm but it runs on when you take the keys out
