I have a 406 90HDI estate. When the tank reaches about a quater and I next switch on the gauge suddenly indicates half full. Is this the sender playing up. Has anybody expereinced this?

Yes, similar things on numerous cars. On my first car (see my avatar) when the needle had got to zero and moved back up to a quarter full 3 times I knew it wasn't joking any more.

I get it all the time on mine, once I've hit 3/4 tank for the 3rd time I know, I need to fill up within 30miles.
Unless I've done a few motorway miles, then I can gamble for the 4th needle jump.
I've even manaed to get the needle to bounce from 3/4 to empty then back to full and the orange light just goes crazy :|

Can be great fun playing garage roulette :?

[sub] Have any of you tried a new tank sender? It seems its a common problem. I priced a new sender but they wanted £71 !! But I'm loath to do it if it doesn't cure the problem and is a design fault.

The car is parked on a slope during the night - but it didn't cause a problem during the first few tank fulls of diesel.

My dad once took a sender out, then noticed a load of rust and rubbish around the hole in the tank so he got his hoover going on it. Luckily, it was only the hoover that exploded.
