Dead Turbo

Hi all, On my XUD 1.9 diesal the turbo is dead. The car still drives and 70mph is possible. However I got it cheap because the yguy was quoted £500 for a new one fitted. If I sourced a second hand one are they hard to fit? I would imagine its only a case of 4 pipes and then the exhaust and manifold bolts. However does a lot have to come out to work on it?

Just looking at Haynes, it looks straight forward, if a little involved. It includes lowering the front subframe for clearance. At least it doesn't start with "Remove the engine" like the 2.1...

ooh dear, well it drives ok at the moment albeit slowly. I may just get used to the 70mph top speed and the fact it cant rev past 3000

Pretty rare for the Turbo to fail. It could be something else? James might know.

Well basically its very reluctant to rev past 3000. There is no smoke, the car doesnt overheat etc. I even looked at the possibility of taking the turbo off and doing away with it.

piss easy to get the turbo out on the 1.9 td, i can do it in about 4 hours in and out, just remove the lower engine movement limiter, get a mate with another car and a tow rope, tie it to the top lifting eye and pull the engine as far forward as possible, then remove the inlet manifold, then remove the turbo complete with exhaust manifold attached
not revving is typical of a needle lift sensor fault, you need to get the fault codes read first, depending of the vintage you maybe able to do this yourself but im not entirely sure how as i cant remember, check that the small black rubber pipe hasnt popped off the black plastic pipe that runs accross the top of the engine, as without it you get no on boost fueling, which feels like no turbo, you can also take the turbo intake pipe off and see if the compressor wheel has seized,

Drove it into work today./ 25 miles over steep hills. Took ages
Basically the car is no faster if I put my foot to the floor, or just touch the throttle lightly. Also at some point I had a warning light come on for a few seconds. It was an engine with a K in the middle??/ Will have a look tonight to see what that means?

Thanks for that. Looks like it may just be a loose connection then. Oh well that rules that out. I would much rather its a sensor than the turbo.

Ive just had the result of the year
I bought the car very cheap (£250) becuse the turbo was supposadly dead.
Finally got to have a look with my father at the steering wheel and me in the engine bay.......
Result I notice a black plastic multiplug fouling the throttle linkage.
Move it back to where its supposed to be and the car now flys
