i gotta clonk

Post by old codger »

i have an intermitant clonk on the offside front-i know its not the brakes, bottom ball joint or track rod end as these have been replaced.

The suspension leg looks fine as do the engine mounts & wishbones-no signs of wear or rubber bushes broken or cracked

Any ideas anyone?

anti roll bar drop link. most common failure on the 406.

about £15 for the part and two nuts to do the job.

how many miles has it done?
i would suspect either lower engine mount or front anti-roll bar bushes

if your engine mount looks like the one in this thread then thats the cause, as for the anti-roll bar bushes, you need to jack up one side at a time, though its the offside in question do this side first, take the wheel off and look at the bush thats wrapped around the anti-roll bar, if its really badly cracked or torn then this is the problem

is it a saloon or estate?
the engine mount is far more common than the bushes

All the bushes look fine-solid,no cracks, breaks or any signs of movement or seperation-even lifted it on trolley jack & dropped it to see if owt happens.

Only thing it seems to stop if its raining or roads are wet.
Wishbones seem fine too.

Top Strut bearing, Mines just gone HDI T Reg, 99 110 Estate, Clunk when your driving at sortof random times, there about £30 from a Motor trade place or yhou can get one from the scrappy.

Its the bit on the top under the metal bit with 3 bolts that mounts the top of the suspension and alows it to turn smothly. when it clunks you may find the steering wheel is slightly out of center, clucnk and its stratight.
