Hi,
How do I check the turbo is working when driving? (my ex focus had a detectable kick around 2000rpm)

Wife says the seats are not comfy,can`t find any lumbar adjustment(surely the nice seats have them?)

I can hear a rattling when initially accelerating, then dissapears-I`m sure I can`t heard it when stationary. I have looked at the threads regarding the tappets, bottom pulley etc...if it was the pulley would I be able to see it wobbling if the wife revved the engine while I watched?
Car has done 154000, cambelt at 108000(don`t know if pulley was changed)

You would know if it wasn't working! try driving with window down for a bit, you should hear the turbo whistle.

Mines is an exec and it doesn't have lumbar. Just don't any had it, bit of shame really especially as i have a duff back!

bottom pump is normally more of a knocking loud noise than rattling. HDi do make different noises, no two sound the same. could just be worn injectors or something. Mine sounds like bag of hammers at idle and has done for over 40k, but it still pulls well and does going on for 55mpg.

If you can out-accelerate a tortoise, the turbo's working More seriously, cruise at a constant speed (fairly low revs but not too low) then quickly put the pedal to the floor. You should feel an initial gentle pull followed a second or 2 later by more forceful acceleration

I think lumbar adjustment is only on drivers seats and then just ones without side airbags

All HDi's 'rattle' through 2000 to 3000 it's characteristic of the common rail system and the very lean fueling for economy, it dissapears at 3000 when the 3rd piston of the high pressure pump kicks in and delivers more fuel.

You should hear the turbo with the window down when you come on/off the throttle. The HDi 110 turbo begins boost at 1750 rpm through to 3000rpm this is the power band you will feel it most.

It is important not to floor the throttle and rev the engine to get performance, rather you need smallish throttle inputs and work with the turbo and all the torque. In 2nd gear you should get a really decent shove from 2000 to 2800 just by feeling the throttle through with the revs i.e don't over do it.

With HDi's it is a mistake to try and push the thing too much (or thrash it) I never go above 3000 rpm in mine but make *full* use of the turbo charger and fuelling available so I consider this is enough for a Diesel style 'clear out' if you ever hold your hand under the tail pipe whilst the engine is revved you'll see why (there is a surprising huge blast of air from it).

The bottom pulley fault is immediately obvious and is a horrible metallic knocking which rises and falls with the revs, you will know something is wrong to the point where you daren't drive the car so if it's not like this then you should be ok.

Please note to be careful looking around at the serpentine belt whilst someone else revs it because if it does fly off it will hit you and the injuries will be nasty. The only way to check the pulley is to remove the belt and check for play in the damper of the pulley.
