Timing Belt...................

.................is no longer a loop, cover is scattered across Dudley Bypass. Happened at just gone midnight after living up to the cars nickname 'Mav's Cabs'

1998 GLX Estate with 1.9Dt engine in it

I REALLY dont wanna get rid of the car. Have gotten attached to it, and am missing it already!! :cry: :cry: :cry:

Options:
1. Can the belt be replaced, and the engine run remotley ok :?:
2. An engine transplant, can it be done on the drive/in small garage? How much is it gonna cost to get it done by a pro?

Somebody please throw some :idea: on the subject.

Oh mate, you have my sympathies, I have nightmares about cam belts snapping... :(

How much damage is really in the lap of the gods, although I think it's extremely unlikely that there won't be any. You won't know for sure until you take the head off, maybe it'll just be a couple of bent valves and you can replace them with new ones (small garage, kitchen table). At least it's a 1,9 and your first job won't be hiring an engine crane.

Think positive! Anyway, the "big boys" will have more to say when they drag themselves out their pits :cheesy:

Incidently, how many miles had the cambelt done? (were you unlucky or were you pushing your luck... :wink: )

Good chance you have only damaged the head-siezed fuel pump on mine at speed but luckily being a 1-9 td the head off the old 405 came in handy.

as the valves sit vertically in the 1.9 i would be supprised it they are bent, how fast were you going when it went?
usually you get a bit of piston damage and possibly a cracked valve they never bend, if the pump has seized i have a spare :lol:
i would take the rocker cover off, and see if any cam carriers are broken and then try and turn the cam sprocket, if it just spins and the camshaft turns its fudged, but if it and the camshaft turns and stops then the valves might be ok, so just stick a belt/tensioner/roller/water pump on and see how it goes, when i used to work for volvo i had an s40 T4 with the belt gone, customer was tighter than a dogs arse, so i put a belt on it and low and behold one cylinder had a slight loss of compression, it ran with a slight misfire but passed an mot and drove fine :lol: lucky git

I was doin bout 35mph round a bend, with a slight up hill gradient.
That seems a little out of my league to start stripping the engine. But do you reckon i shud try a new belt on it before i take it to the spanner monkey :?:

What do you reckon the best case scenario price would be :?: and dare i say it: the worst case scenario price :?:

you need to indentify what caused the belt to go
i.e. seized/exploded tensioner or roller, seized water pump, seized fuel pump etc, then fit a belt, re-set the timing obviously and see how it runs, if it does, as it went at that speed there will be some damage, it just depends on the extent,
the best thing to do would be to get a used head, thats in a known good working order and fit that
quite a simple job on that engine, just time consuming

Have had a proper look in daylight, without the rain and snow, and the belt is actually intact.
BUT the cog at the very top is now in about 20 pieces, along with the plastic cover.
Have been quoted around 300 quid just to put a new belt on to see if it works, then up to a grand to repair any damage that may have been caused!! That is from the main stealer tho, have got a quote for round 500 quid, and is looking like the most decent price.

I always think that it's better to replace the whole engine when this happens.

Wouldn't you get one for about 300.00? then fitting will be about 400.00 with a few new belts etc.

Probably cheaper to replace the car?

Perhaps an open valve got hit by a piston at just the right time to get pushed straight up, bending the cam instead of the valve, and causing the sprocket to grind against the head?

sounds like the camshaft sezied and the belt jumped, i dont think i have ever seen a cambelt that has snapped, they usually shred or slip

The head has now been removed..........................
With a much closer inspection, the cam shaft is now in FOUR pieces, the water pump and alternator are also now f*ck*d.
Am getting an engine transplant hopefully. Just gotta take a look at the donor engine, and make sure its ok, and will fit :!:
Am looking at 300 quid for the transplant and engine, then up to another 100 for bits that may get broken in the process.
At least i'll be back on the road soon (famous last words i know :!: lol)

Nasty, new engine does sound best solution. There was long thread on here where someone else swapped over 1.9dt engines. Probably worth reading it to prepare you. Thread may have disappeared went the bard got hacked thou.

While you have the new engine out you may want to fit new cambelt (and water pump) while you have easy access.

had a fone call from the spanner monkey, got the 'new' engine to fit in. jst gotta fit all the electrics to it and replace the belts.
so shud be getting to fire her up for the first time in over a week, either tomorrow or wednesday :!:
man can i not wait to turn that key :)
