Couple of Queries on 406 HDi Estate 90 Horse

Post by Garry »

Hello all,

New to Peugeots and to this site.

I've just bought a secondhand 406HDi (90 horse) Estate (2001) and over the past few weeks I've noticed a few prolems, nothing serious just niggly

1) When the car is turned off after a drive or even just started and immediately turned off, I've noticed a "whirring" sound that seems to be coming from in or around the base of the windscreen inside the engine compartment. Goes on for about 30 seconds, then there's a click (like a relay) and the sound stops. Anyone know what this is and if this is serious or is it normal?

2)The CD player won't work, Radio is OK but the CD player won't recognise any CDs. Is this a big fix or am I better off putting in my own unit (if so can I order a panel to cover up the dead-space).

3) Parked on a hill (tail facing downwards) lately and when I went to drive off the fuel guage was stuck at low. Only rectified itself after I filled the car. Is this a regular thing???

4) I got a low Oil warning at the same time the fuel guage stuck and have got it again when parked on a kerb (only about 3 inches high). Is this something to worry about??

Many thanks

Garry

Multichanger? If so, make sure you've got the discs in the right way up :) At least you managed to find it ;)

Yeah, the fuel tank sensor isn't in the middle so there's a fair amount of guesswork involved when you're not on the flat.

the 406 fuel gauge must be the most inaccurate of any car i have driven, actually that was a mk1 citroen ax, the needle would sway quite rapidly on roundabouts
as for the cd player, mine does the same, tries to load the disc and then spits it straight back out again, peugeot do a exchange-repair programme for about £75, ive tried 3 aftermarket radios in my car and it doesnt like any of them, it develops a mind of its own, turning on and off, multifunction display stays on, radio turns on or off when opening the door etc..
the noise after switching off could be normal, it depends on what EGR system your engine is fitted with
and as for the oil level, have you actually checked it on the dipstick, as these are also woefully inacurate

My CD player (or not was the case) didn't work , but I sorted the problem for just a few pence and 1/2hours work.Basically the lens gets coated with the same crap that the inside of the windows get, no wonder it gives up over time. Forget CD lens cleaners, they really are a total waste of time. All you need to do is to carefully take the unit apart until you can get at the lens of the laser assembly. Just carefully clean the CD lens using a few drops of camera lens cleaner on a lens tissue. Put everything back together and hey presto, it WILL work perfectly!

Exhaust Gas Recirculation, its basically a system that recycles exhaust gases by passing them back through the inlet manifold into the combustion chamber to lower NoX emissions,

back to the cd problem, i just stripped down my unit to see if i could clean the lense only to find that the ribbion cable for one of the microswitches had a crack so i cut that section out and carefully solderd in some replacement wires and reffited it and its fully working and as good as new 8)

James; so okay your problem wasn't the same as most but either way it got you to open the CD player up and find out what the problem was and fix it - so I would call that a worthwhile result!

Many thanks for the info folks,

Got the Stereo out. Looks like I'm not the first person thats had a go at repairing it. Found a tear in one of the ribbon cables, so sorted that and also cleaned the laser, replaced the unit and it started to play a CD. I thought :cheesy: :cheesy: but now it only plays intermittently, it won't load CDs all the time. If one does load then it will play OK, but if I take the CD out and put the same CD in again it won't always play (I effin hate intermittent problems). Anyone any ideas????

theres 2 holes, one either side of the unit, just insert allen keys or a wire coat hanger till you feel each side "click" then the unit should come out.

Yes, I have a feeling mine's going to end up in the bin soon (won't turn on, won't turn off, won't play CDs same as yours  ). Or at least keep it to sell with the car when I flog it.
