I have recently aquired a 51 reg estate hdi 90. I need to change both front suspension bottom ball joints, the ones that screw into the bottom of the strut. I understand i need a special tool. Has any one ever done this job and if so is it reasonably straightforward? And is it easy to get hold of the tool?

done quite a few on 405's & 406's now-i stick the hub carrier in a vice, put some gentle heat on the carrier then get it out with stillsons-put the new one back in with a cycle spanner-dont forget to chisel the 'staked' bit first & then stake it once its in.

Proper tool was a total waste of money i found.
