My cold idle's been getting much much worse recently and it's gotten to the stage where I need to hold it at revs for a few minutes before I set off, otherwise it'll stall if the clutch is down for more than a couple of seconds. I think this is the jobbie that controls idling:



One side is plugged into the air pipe from the intercooler and the other end is linked by a ~3/4in pipe to the throttle body. Servicebox just calls it a "compensator" but I *think* it's what autodata's calling "idle air control valve". Reckon this is my problem? Unfortunately it's a ludicrous £170 from the dealers! You can get a whole sodding tubby for that much!

that is the idle air control valve. you can try removing it and giving it a good clean through with carb cleaner. they usually gunk up and refuse to work properly.

if its f*cked, there not pug dependant. you will find there fitted to all different sorts of cars, so take a trip to the scrappy and match it up. my bet would be a volvo or a vauxhall will be the same.

i would be certain that a volvo one should fit too, one from either a 440 or late 850 turbo, some renaults have them too
when i used to work for volvo, i used to clean a lot of them as on the turbo's all of the oil and gunk on the intake side would cause them to get stuck, if you take it off and shake it violently and it doesnt rattle then its stuck
