Convert drums to discs???

Thanks for all your helpful suggestions on what to do for my drum brake problem

I am now thinking of converting to disc brakes altogether as i will have to spend a fortune on new drum shoes cables etc etc. My uncles d9 110 has disc brakes and it stops like anything! Mine wasn't so good and neither is my dads d9 90 or my other uncles d9 90. (We have a lot of pugs in the family, Ill list them all later for the fun) Anyway, does any one know if i can convert the drums to discs at the back? Is it too pricey? Is it worthwhile?

As promised...........List of family pugs (I'm proud of this)

Uncle1 - 2006 407 Hdi 136 exec
Uncle2 - 2001 406 Hdi 110 exec
Uncle3 - 1998 406 SLDT
Uncle4 - 1996 406 SLDT
Dad - 2000 406 Hdi 90 SR
Me - 2000 406 Hdi 90 Lx
Mother - 2007 307 1.4 ST
Sister - 2000 206 1.1 Lx

You may notice the spec names vary as the irish ones are different to the brits

Yes I'm a paddy

Top of the morning to you :cheesy: Have a play around on service box, (you'll need to sign up but it's free). You can stick in the chassis number for your car and your uncle's and see just what exactly is different. I'm thinking you might have to change everything right down to the stub axle, probably brake lines and the rear handbrake cables too. Although you should be able to source most of the parts from breakers, things like the hubs you'll need to buy as pulling them off is supposed to destroy the bearings (Pugsparesare about 1/3 the price of Pug...) Service box will also give you an idea of much things will cost from a dealer, although don't forget to add vat, service charges, stamp duty, window tax and your contribution to the dealerships' bi-annual trip to Las Vegas

I've no idea if it's worth it though, the disks on the front should be doing most the work anyway. Maybe you should look at these first, are the callipers ok? Are the disks scored/knackered? Is your servo dead weight??

It'd be a fair bit of work, and you'll still have the fun of drums for the handbrake

Well I joined servicebox, but due to the fact that the machine is 20 miles away being fixed, I cant get to the vin number. Anyways, thanks steve I'll stick to the ugly drums for now as a result of your advice on all the stuff that has to be changed. IMO, the 406 is a big car and should never have been issued with drums in any model in the first place. The back brakes were well and truly f*cked. My mechanic said I was lucky the back wheels didnt lock up doing 60 on the way down. It's gonna be a pricey one and I'm starting to wonder if i bought a lemon. Of course, I'd get another 406 easily but I'd really check it out next time. Its done 153,000 and the only thing thats perfect is the engine!

One of you guys wrote that the d8 is way more reliable. Probably is eh? but the d9 has it on looks though. Image is everything.

Depends, I've never been too keen on the D9's styling. Yellow paintwork with black checkers, or orange with red/white stripes never did it for me... ;)

I've not seen any in those colour schemes, what have you been smoking?

I dunno about the drum brakes, much bigger things than our Pugs have them so they're not really a handicap.

Mmm, imagine having automatic adjusters

well i got the car back. the 150,000 mile old shoe fell off in the drum. The best case scenario really. well its drums all the way for me from now on. Discs look cooler tho......................i see i raised some eyebrows with my bold statement about how the d8 is a bit dated and unstylish. sorry

They are cooler, that's the point. If you ever feel the temptation to thrash your motor round Brands you'll be regretting listening to me. Hur hur.

Pfft, matter of preference, I agree with you myself, it's just a shame Pug's way of "facelifting" the electronics is proving such a disaster.

Mmm, D5.8 - D9 on the outside, D8 on the inside.... daydreams

Hey guys, just out of interest does the D9 grill(e) fit the D8?

I think you'd need to get the wings, bonnet, headlights and bumper to go with it. I was tempted to do this when I got mine and that's what I was told.

Yellow paintwork with black checkers and 'AA' written on the side
orange with red/white stripes and 'RAC' written on the side...

:cheesy:
