please can anybody help me with this problem I have a 1996 (p) 406 TD 1900
The problem I am experiencing is intermittent but becoming more regular.
Symptoms are, when starting the engine the rev counter does not work or spins round to 3 or 4k then back to below 0 or just goes to below 0 without going up. The engine then runs in an advanced state. In other words it knocks a lot.
If I then turn the ignition off and restart it without the rev counter problem the engine run normally. I may have to restart a number of times to get it to run without the knocking or I can be lucky and it works fine the first time. So there is no traceable pattern.

The crank shaft censer has been replaced. Another ECU has been used but with it the problem was constant.
HELP!!!!!
Any suggestions gratefully accepted I am totally confused.

i bet its the fuel pump advance solenoid, when they seize they do make the engine knock really bad

I had that on my 2.1, revs up and down, pig to drive in traffic and occasionally sounds like a tank with no oil in it, it didn't affect the rev counter though.

does the K light ever come on?

hi i have the exact same car and the exact same thing has just started happening on mine. did you manage to find the problem?
