Busted cam belt (and LPG question).

OK, so I think I've done in my cam belt on my 2.0L D8. Labour costs here in Aus. are high, particularly as Peugeots generally and 406s especially are quite uncommon, therefore I'm looking at >AU$1200 for a Peugeot specialist to do the work.
I'm wondering if I'm better off just transplanting the engine altogether with a lower-milage one. My question becomes, which engine should I get? There seem to be more V6s here in wrecking yards, so in terms of availability, a V6 is probably quickest and easiest. Otherwise, Peugeot only imported 2.0L engines into Australia.
Is there any reason why a V6 engine would be incompatible with a D8 manual that was originally built with a 2.0L?
Finally, has anyone converted either engine to LPG? The Australian Government is giving a $2000 rebate to people who convert to gas (and gas prices are 50c/litre compared to $1.40/litre.), which on a regular Ford Falcon (equivalent to a Mondeo or Vectra in terms of numbers of them on the road) costs about $2500. I've no idea what an LPG technician would charge to do it on a Peugeot, I'm just wondering if it has been done much.
