any decent aircon place will leak dye it for to check if the system has a leak anywhere. its a false economy to just get it regassed.

Indeed, if they're any good they'll do it as a matter of course but it's probably best to ask for it, just in case. I have a feeling that if you leave the system empty it'll develop more faults. They do tend to loose pressure over time so it's probably normal.

If your car is 6/7/8 years old it is almost certainly the condenser is perished.
It is VERY common here.
There is also a piece of a/c pipework that corrodes under the battery but the condenser is favourite.
The condenser is £300.00 fitted, or about £170.00 if you do the donkey work.

That's a bastard. Still, you won't know until someone tried to pressurize it. My D8's 10 years old, the system was empty last year so Pug used the dye on it, it's still holding pressure a year later. But then I'm not in the UK and they don't rush out and shovel salt everywhere the moment there's a bit of a nip in the air.
Incidently, they have started using salt here, although sparingly (mainly due to them being caught out) and not NaCl (only good down to -5).
