problem is when i start my car after standing a long period and its cold
i get a lumpy tickover similar to an old petrol engine till it warms up.
after a short perid of driving and its warmed up it ticks over smoothly
without missing a beat ,anyone else experience this or have any ideas
its a hdi (and the first person to mention hp pump i will hunt down and slay them )

I've got the same with mine, had it while.
Garage recked i should change the glow plugs, i am not so sure as it does it when the engine is partially warm (few hours after been run). It does seem a fair place to start thou.
After that I am think either sensor of duff injector. Haven't got time/energy to worry about it at the minute.

Mine does this, you start the engine and you can see the revs drop slightly then pick up, then drop like it wants to stall. It does this for the first minute of running.
My theory is the high loads on the alternator what with the cabin electrical heater, the glow plugs, as these circuits come on and off line the revs take a hit.
It never cuts out and the fluctuations are *very* slight and can only really be detected by a genius like myself. I wouldn't say it was 'rough' by any means.
If you thought it was going to actually stall but saved itself then I would say somethng was up.
Also when the temp is below zero it missfires for a few seconds and then evens out but always starts on the first key. The glow plugs last ages on HDi's and aren't really needed mostly. Mine's probably still on it's originals after 9 years but I would only change them if I struggled to start it.
PS. I think your HP pump is knackered £££££££££££££££££££££'sssssss

Thanks lads what you both described is exactly what happens to mine.
It always starts first time and nowhere near stalls, you both have mentioned
good possibilities for this and as it runs fine otherwise it will be something to
monitor
By the way welly you are dead for that little mention
( this will also take some of the strain out of the long term affair i have been having with mrs welly

)
