Newbie 406 XUD Executive Problems

Got a '96 406 Executive XUD with a few problems I want to solve before sale. Firstly and most important the rear drivers side brake (drum type) is sticking intermittently. First happened once I was doig some running about in the car around town.....high pitched squealing and then smell of brake lining burning. This then stopped once at speed and never came back until I was running about around town again today a full two weeks after!

Secondly the headlamp washer is broken/missing on the passenger/nearside. I am in the process of finding a replacement but just wondering what kind of a job it will be to replace.....will I have to remove the bumper to replace it.

Passenger/Nearside foglight lense is cracked/holed (damned stones) again whats the procedure for replacement and does it involve rwemoving the front bumper.

I cannot find a Remote Central Locking Sensor. I presume they are situated under the plastic glass dome where the courtesy light/sunroof switches are on the roof.

Yep, they're attached to the bumper

Not done this myself, but you should be able to raise the front end then remove a couple of plastic panels beneath the fogs for limited access.

Depends on the type. I think infrared types are mounted there, but the RF types are mounted in the console, either under the glovebox or near the fusebox i think,

I take it I would be wise to attempt the reprogramming procedure. I'd assumed because I couldn't find a sensor in the plastic dome where the courtesy/sunroof switches are, that it was missing as there seems to be room for one!

Just a quick update.....had the drums off today and cannot find a problem so have cleaned them up and then readjusted them and put them back together. Reading previous posts when I say Central Locking Sensor, I mean the part the remote fob "blips" to in order to activate the locking. I don't mean the central locking ECU. Looking at previous posts about Remote Locking I see they mention the reprogramming procedure if your car has a BSI....will mine (being one of the first at '96 N plate) have one and so require that type of reprogramming?

Yep. Just checked it out and it's somewhere behind the glovebox. Being RF it doesn't need line-of-sight.

Ohhhh....OK  Surprised a car this old has a remote fob rather thamn just a infrared. I've got a Mercedes at the moment too that is a year newer but only has an Infrared remote! What programming should I follow? The button key press with the key in the ignition type or the window down and BSI reset type one? (my remote fob/key is the two button type with a smaller button I believe for deadlocking).

A '96 406 won't have a BSI luckily, so that procedure's about as good as my impression of a sober person on friday nights. There's one floating around to do something with the keys, can't remember much about it though.

It's all slowly becoming clearer! Got new batteries coming for the remote over the next few days. If this don't work what would I need to remove off a scrapper to enable remote locking again.

You'll need to hijack both the key and the RF receiver, although there may be issues with your ECU refusing to talk to it.

As far as I'm aware the only alternative means you'd be looking at a new set of keys and a receiver (£254 for the set) which will require some electronic jiggery-pokery by a dealer, so probably a lot more £££ for labour. The inbuilt codes in the keys and receiver can't be set outside the factory (although you can order replacement keys for £112 each) so you need them to match, and you can't buy the receiver separately. If you're lucky you'll be able to transfer the existing key blades over to the new fobs.

Can't the fob part of the remote key just be transferred over to a different blade?

Me again (new profile as old one become corrupt after changing the email on it!). I've received the new batteries for the plip and have attempted to program the key but it isn't having it (I've only got the one key so the procedure said press the primary button three times while in the ignition!). Whats my next course of action in attempting to get the damn thing working?

Also I notce the replacement foglight I've got has got part of the plastic bracket broken. Can I remove the foglight lense off the one that is smashed and already on the car and replace just the lense with lense from the good one on my broken bracket replacement.
