MOT Failed :(

Yup, it's failed. Shockingly the emissions test came back pretty much perfect, but it's failed on 2 things:

1. NSF track rod end ball joint has excessive play
2. NSF CV joint gaiter split

Looking at Haynes I reckon I can do the track rod end by myself, but the CV gaiter with limited tools and working in the street, that's another story altogether. How much will it cost me in terms of labour time for a garage to do it?

If you use a decent mobile or garage based mechanic you know it shouldn't be more than a 1 hours labour so around £50 including the new CV boot would be a ballmark figure. I recently had a wheel bearing changed as well as some other seperate work I couldn't be bothered to do myself to a BMW cylinder head I had and it cost £100 all in.

He had to check, but it was ok. Dammit why aren't garages open evenings and weekends? Going to be a right ballache getting the car to be fixed and re-tested.

you'd be better off getting a tyre fitting place to fit the track rod end for you cos the adjustments are so fine it will be very easy to get the tracking wrong when you fit the new one so at least that way they will reset the tracking when they fit it , i made that mistake and the edge of the tyre scrubbed away ni no time
