2l tubby timing & aux belt change

Hey Everyone
I've got to replace the timing and aux belt; what other parts should I be changing at the same time?
I've heard mention that you can get an auxilliary belt kit with the tensioner but is there a similar kit for the timing belt?
I'm in unknown territory and would appreciate any advice!
Thanks in advance

You should allways use a cambelt 'kit' including tensioner and any idler wheels.
Replacng the water pump at the same time is a very good idea.
The Auxillary belt tensiner should not be changed unless the beaings are worn/noisey. Most of the time any noise is cured by replacing just the belt itself.
Teamy - it appears to me that the 406 cambelt is not
that stressed so you could do worse than just to whip the cover off and inspect the belt! just ask mjb how durable the cambelts are

still don't think he's changed his some 50,000 mies over due
It is ny opinion that the £300.00 odd to change it on a sub-£1,000.00 car is a waste of money

Thanks Welly, I'll whip the cover off over the weekend. Saves having to dump my brand new coolant!
It's done 110,000 and got a full pug service history so in
theory the cambelt should be fairly new
The aux belt is definitely knackered, I was worried about the aux tension roller cos the grooves on it are cracked

ffs I just wrote a massive reply to this, pressed submit then closed the tab. Unfortunately welly's reply meant it needed re-submitting. arse.
In short:
You can get a cambelt kit from the dealer, about £25. You'll want to buy a pile of wheelarch liner screws as well, as they rust quite badly. You also want to throw a new water pump in while you're there.
I don't think the aux belt tensioner is replaceable, but a bit of a clean-up, some WD40, and a lot of tugging will un-seize it and you'll be able to feel how strong it is. Mine's VERY strong. To replace the aux belt you'll find it easier if you rip the ECU and its box out.
The upper cambelt cover is a bitch to take off because of the bolt in the middle of it. Save yourself time by putting a jack under the sump to take the weight then remove the upper engine mount. 3 bolts at the back, a nut on the dome, and 4 screws on the engine. Loosen the joints before though as it'll make it a lot easier and stress them less.
Be wary that this may all be in vain unless you have access to hefty tools. I'm a BIG bloke and I couldn't shift the camshaft pullet belt with a 3 foot breakers bar.
My tubby had its last belt change well over 100,000 miles ago. Never hurts to check its condition though!
Actually I can sell you a timing belt kit and water pump! My tubby's dead now so I won't be needing them

That's superb mjb, thank you very much!
I've got a new cambelt already but hopefully I won't need to fit it if the service history is accurate
Just need to get the aux belt.
How much damage did the bonnet do when it flew up mjb? Was it just the hinges & bonnet that were f*cked or more?
Edit: Forget that, I've just read your for sale thread

That sounds like a Jenny Craig website!

Plus the fact I can't drive anywhere to get a new bonnet because the MOT's expired and there wasn't one at a local breakers yard = £££ for the bonnet+hinges+fitting
It's on the carpark at work at the moment (locked and immobilised but I'm quietly hoping someone steals/burns it so I can claim insurance!!!!), and I gave it a last revving this evening. First time I've ever hit the rev limiter!
I'm going to miss it. Fantastic car.

You'd get away with driving it with no mot for a bit as long as it's taxed & insured, surely!
How on earth are you supposed to get your vehicle repaired for its mot otherwise!
If they collar you it's £60 fixed penalty apparently for no mot.

1. ANPR cameras
2. It's £1000 maximum fine
3. It stands a good chance of invalidating my insurance.

You're allowed to drive an un-MOTd car TO (not from) a garage or a test centre with an advance appointment. Whenever I've booked an MOT I've always been asked for the reg if its MOT has expired, so if the coppers phone up they can say 'yeah it's booked'.
