There is a lot of debate about HDi fuel filters & a search on here will give some idea of the issues, I have been lucky & changed a dozen or more without a problem.
Firstly absolute cleanliness is important, so clean the outside of the filter housing thoroughly.
The plastic housing becomes very brittle wth age so make sure the engine is hot.
Remove the quick release hoses by pressing in the coloured catches & carefuly pull back the pipes.
Using a six sided socket or spanner on the hex shape on the top , push down to overcome the spring pressure & turn the top anti-clockwise.
The filter will only fit one way due the peg in the bottom, but remember absolute cleanliness
Refit in reverse order but don't force anything or it will break.

Mine broke when I was trying to twist it open, £50, robbing sods.

The mechanic I go to said he always chanes the filter housing on HDi, because of this.
