Loss of power

I've got a 406 2.0l HDI executive born in 2000 it has now covered 232000 miles. To date I've had only what I would term as normal motoring issues and cost and have no complaints to the loyal service it has giving. I know it is getting very tired. A few weeks ago I had a new Cam belt etc. fitted. all of a sudden I have a major loss of power. Like the bigest turbo lag you could imagine. it starts to pull when I get upto 3500-4000 rpm. below that it wouldn't pull the sink off a rice pudding. Its running but I dare not even overtake a lorry as it is. Has anyone any ideas what could be causing this. I attached to my pug and don't want it to die just yet.

I know very little about diseasels, but it sounds to me like you've lost your turbo. If it's anything like my old 2.0 petrol turbo, the wastegate control will be a little black thing (about the size of a kinder surprise capsule) attached to the NS suspension mounting thing (ie. right by the cambelt), with 3 pipes and an electrical plug going to it. I'd look in that area first.

You could try revving the engine from under the bonnet. If there's a vacuum leak you may be able to hear it

I was about to put a post up with the very same issue power loss that I happened me just yesterday.
I know its not the turbo with me anyways. She picks up great turbo after 2000 rpm. But I've such a lag before the turbo that i never got before. I did open the air filter housing to clean the filter and its been bad ever since.

Maybe our problems are two of the same

Any suggestions dudes before I have to change my forum signature as a result of this problem?

If it started straight after that perhaps you should read the "Mass Air Flow" Post.

well having read the post, i can conclude that it is indeed a AFM problem. Heres my questions:

Do these things just break and have to be replaced or can they be fixed and reset?

If it needs replacing, what part number is it so i can try fleabay, they have this one there, is this it?

Well lads. I took the amf or maf or whatever its called off and looked inside. despite what can only be described as a few crumbs inside, it looks pretty clean. put it all back on and drove the car. it runs a lot better again. maybe i hit something when i took out the air filter yesterday to clean it????

Thats for all the comments I'll have a dabble with the MAF at the weekend and hope I get some improvements. Interrested in the wastegate control comments from MJB. if its the same as the petrol there is a chance something has been dislodged whilst the cambelt was being changed.

As the saying goes. "Watch this space" I'll let you all know the outcome.

Someone on here ages ago (I think it was "xplosive") had to have a Vac pump replaced because he had a serious lack of power as there was no Vacuum going to the wastegate. At this high mileage I wouldn't be surprised at a vac pump (or AFM).

I'm just surprised the in-tank pump hasn't failed yet, or, has it?

I would be surprised if the in-tank pump failed, I fitted a new one about 18 months ago. It didn't fail completely but did keep sticking. With the milage I do I couldn't risk total breakdown so got it done. Pump was a bit pricey from main stealer but fitting not a major issue from what my guy said.

Interested in the comments on the Vac pump and i'll keep that in mind.

Just like to thank you all again for your help. I now know what I'm doing over Easter. I had just about given up on the pug. One garage had a look under the bonet started her up for 2 mins then told me I needed a new turbo. Not a good commercial option with that mileage on her.

I KNOW THIS SOUNDS ODD...BUT IN REPLY TO YOU LOSING POWER...I HAD THE SAME THING AFTER CHANGING A RADIATOR AND I HAD NOT TIGHTENED THE INTERCOOLER AIR HOSE (NEXT TO RAD)BACK ON PROPERLY...AFTER I DID THIS IT WAS LIKE A BULLET AGAIN....WELL NEARLY
