hey Rappy good news - managed to get a quote from a local garage for £340 to inc belt, tensioner ,water pump, consumables & labour (4.5 hours) a bit different than the £25 for a cam belt kit for the 306 i did that myself in an hour and a half after replacing the head gasket & 2 bent valves, the tensioner disintergrated at 45mph,the main stealer wanted £850.
total cost to me was cam kit £25
gasket kit £24
stretch bolts £8
stupid Edrive socket £4
packet of plasters £2

Why don't you do it yourself?

The HDi timing belt isn't that much different to change than the 306, in fact it's a little easier, in my opinion. The difference is the engine mounting setup and the tensioner, the 306 has a springloaded tensioner, the HDi has the eccentric type that you tension yourself by pushing it against the belt manually.

The timing setup is slightly different, but if you mark the position of all the sprockets before you strip it, you can't go wrong.

Also, there are a couple of different belts fitted, one is longer than the other. The water pump is easy to change when the belt is off.

I did one last week, and three before Christmas.

Belt kit, including tensioner and guide roller....£85. Fan belt £9. Didn't change the water pump, each one had done only about 48,000 miles and were in good condition. A rough guess for the water pump would be about £40.The company that own the vehicles insist on 48,000 miles for timing belt changes.

I use Gates timing belt kits, top quality parts.

It usually takes me about 2 to 2 and a half hours to do a HDi timing belt job.

My car covered it's first 96000 miles without fault, then I bought it and spent the next 24000 miles finding out just exactly what can (and does) go wrong with HDi's

I could have (and should have) bought a V6 and I'd still have change for a bag of chips and a bus ride home :|

Hi all, thought I'd say hello. Just found this forum, I'm sure it will be useful.

My beloved old 98 2.1td exec est is going strong on 203m. Various bits replaced in the 7 years I've had it. The most painfull was a rebuilt fuel pump on 124m. Had cambelt etc changed 5m ago and regularly serviced every 6m it should go on for ever (I hope) :)

I don't think there's many cars out there more reliable than a 406 with a 2.1td :) You'll be glad to know a few of those things have been spotted around the half million mile mark

PS. The moon is only 239,000 miles away!

My 2001 HDI has 135000 and I service it every 10-12000 miles, it runs like when was new, very pleased with it.

Well, my D8 1.8LX has a blown bulb on the odometer. So, it looks to me like mine has done 888,888 miles. Do I win a prize?
