406 1.9 HDI Won't start after Breakdown

Hi all.
After the car broke down with my wife on Saturday I can't restart it. Because she was panicing she can't remember if the engine suddenly cut out or if it just lost power. AA arrived and patrolman diagnosed no fuel at injectors and thought the crankshaft sensor was the cause. This was replaced but didn't cure problem. The fuel pump seems to be pumping fuel so I assume that is ok. It doesn't help the car is stuck in economy mode which won't clear until engine has started. I'm going to have to call out a mobile electrician but I just wondered if anyone can suggest anything before I do. Car has done 100000 trouble free miles up to now.
Thanks
Ronnie

I seem to remember on here that when your car gets stuck in economy mode then this is your car telling you that the battery has insufficient power to operate the car safely.
You could try disconnecting the earth lead from the battery for 20mins and see if it resets - it won't do any harm.
Also if the pump in the tank is playing up then a good whack to the tank can spark it into life for a while and will confirm the problem is with the pump.

There really is a 1.9 HDi??

I suppose it must be an HDi if it has economy mode (feeling "told").
It won't hurt to give the battery a wee charge while it's off too. The lift pump in the tank does seem choice for "sudden death" scenarios - how do you know fuel is being pumped, diesel stains on your garage ceiling??

There isn't a 1.9HDi they're all 2.0's maybe this will be a nice surprise to Ronnie?

Sorry I should have said 1.9HD
The car has a new alternator and on this model there is no pump in the boot. I checked with dealer and also looked. Since owning the car 3 years ago it has always gone into econ mode when I sith with engine off and radio off. Fuel pump seems to be pumping and I have changed the crankshaft sensor. There is no fuel coming through the injectors so I assume the fault has to be fuel related.
Thanks for replies
Ronnie

if you have a centre console display which reads
ECONOMY MODE ACTIVE then you have the newer 2.0HDi. I don't understand why something is showing 'econ mode' when you have the engine and radio OFF - off is off and that's it, it shouldn't say anything.

I understood ALL HDi's have a lift pump but maybe if yours is a 90BHP model they don't have one but I'd be surprised if it hasn't to be honest.
I think it's between the battery and the pump on this one. Hopefully James on here might be able to help further.

Hi
Our mechanic removed sender unit from tank and it doesn't have a pump. I've contacted a Auto Electrician that we know and who is good and see if Code Reading shows up a problem.

it will be a siemens 2.0 90 with no lift pump, i bet the HP pump has failed, could be crank sensor or cam phase sensor, need fault codes first please

Fault Code keeps coming up as P0341 Cam Sensor so i will change that and see what happens. The mechanic also said another reading he is getting is the Input shows 5amps but the output reads 10amps which is puzzling so it could be a ECU problem.
Any further advice appreciated.
