I used a strap to remove the top on mine found it easier when engine hot when it was off i cleaned & dried the threads & sparingly applied a good quality silicone grease to the male thread before re - assembling now its fairly easy to remove.

How often should the filter be changed?
I had the main dealer do mine 2 years ago (17000 miles ago).

I think the book is every 30 or 40k. Personally i'd did/would do it every 20k.

on a HDi i would change the filter housing every other oil change, expensive but extends the life of the HP pump and injectors (mainly siemens) greatly

book oil change is 12k, so in theory filter every 24k.
yes you get a filter in the housing (i've bought one before!)
