How is the spare wheel usually secured?

Hi,

recently I heard some knocking noise from the Boot of my 406 (2002) when I for example went over a speedbumper or something similiar and yesterday finally got the chance to have a look at it.

It seems my spare wheel is lying more or less unfixed in the hole in the boot, and therefore "jumping around". How is the spare wheel usually secured? There doesn't seem to be anything to fix it to (i.e. screw or so). But there are two hooks that look like they might have had straps in the past to secure the wheel. Is that how the wheel is secured?

Any idea if they can be had online somewhere? Unfortunately I don't have a Peugeot Dealer around, and won't get to the scrapdealer for some time.

Cheers,
dsab

Yeah it should be strapped in, although to be honest I don't rate the straps much. Just get any tie down type thingy from a diy shop, that'd do it

How fast did you take the speed bump?

406 spare wheels (at least on the 3 I've seen) aren't secured, and don't actually need to be...

My spare wheel has the original luggage strap thing (which you can't get very tight). I don't think this will be the cause of the noise you are getting, more likely something under the wheel rattling around or a worn suspension bush etc.

That's ok - peugeot fitted most saloons with a test-your-own punctures 'water bath' - quite handy really 8)

Yeah I've still got the strap in mine. It crosses over that solid foam insert that the jack lives in, seems to tighten up pretty well.

Ha ha test your own punctures i like it. The problem on the saloon is when you wash it water runs past the lights into the spare tyre well. I solved this by applying clear silicone sealent across the top of the light cluster on the black part now water runs off and does not blow bulbs and no long have a test your own punctures like before

Ah now, I might be able to shed some light on this one. My car was rear ended 2 years ago. When I got it back, I questioned where the straps were and the repairer said Peugeot discontinued them.

Ever since then, mine "bounces" in the boot when I go over a speed hump a bit to fast. So that reminds me to get some rachet straps and get the job done properly.

Teamster, I used Paint Shop. It was a bit of a swine to find the balance between file size and the right effect, but I'm happy with the turn out.

That's it. I tried to get it so that the front lights went red, so they would be in the same place as the rear lights when the photo changes, but couldn't get it to look right, so made a straight change.
