Help! 1.9TD Losing power,ECU light,Air Flow Sensor????

Hi all,
This is my first post and desperate for some advice. I have a 97 R reg 1.9TD, 99000miles. Love the car but now after owning her for a year and half the problems are starting!
On a few occasions over the past few weeks, when accelerating, upon reaching 3000rpms, the car dies, as though I've hit the limiter, & the ECU light comes on momentarily. The car is fine after!
Today... its happened quite often, but not dying, just no power, as though the Turbo has gone!!! After lunch and a brief stand still, the car struggled starting, something I have never had a problem with. Anyway, I got it started and she drove home like a dream! Strange!
I have panicked thinking its the turbo, but have been told a Turbo either works or it doesn't.
My brother owns a Golf TDI, he has told me his air flow sensor went and it felt like somebody hooking a caravan up to car every now and again, slowing it down.
This does sound like a similar story to my pug.
Will the car need to go on a diagnostics computer to find this out?
Also any ideas how much this might cost to fix?
My mechanic cant see to it for another two weeks,I have quite a few jobs I need him to see to, but this problem is rather worrying, I want it sorting soon!
Thanks
Alison

Hi Alison, Welcome on in! :D
A few people here have had similar problems recently and changing the airflow meter cured it for them!
Hope you get it sorted!

I hate to jump in and bite your bum but......
I've just replaced mine and the car has gone from going practically backwards whenever the boot was applied to now driving like I stole it - I have never had so much fun and the car is quite literally flying :cheesy:
And all this after the main stealer told me it was the electro valve and air dozer and new ones did not cure the fault.
Since replacing this I now remember my old mechanic replacing a fair few of these actually
