adoo all,

just a thought arisen when i was looking at the different makes of oil at me local halfrauds, apparently they recommend several viscosities from 15-40w down to " rat wazz viscosity for 406#s, just wondering if anyone has got experience of experimenting with oil viscosities and different brands, just what suits our pugs best ? the last oil change i put in magnatec 15-40w, i found it didnt quite suite even though the viscosity rating was recommended by the stealer and the stuff aint cheap i dont like skimping on a great deal of anything to do with my car, especially oil as its one of if not the most important thing to go into an engine. Any info would greatfully appreciated as i gotta change it pretty soon as its getting as black as a coalminers undercrackers :P

me car is a :

2002 406 2.0l HPI saloon, only modded with a induction air filter.

15W/40 is a bit thick for this climate really - I consider 10W/40 to be the best all round performer for Engines.

My favourite oil is Fuchs/Silkolene XTR 10W/40 semi-synthetic, I've used it in a Honda VTEC, Mazda & Mitsi V6's, and my Diesel and it's lovely stuff. In fact 'lesser' manufacturer's would be able to classify it as fully synthetic it's that good but Silkolene don't as they have a large range already.

I get it sent by Courier from a place ooop north (x-cite motorsport) - costs about £15.00 for 4 litres plus £7.00? carriage it's best to buy 2x4ltrs for topping up etc. (if you ask nicely they will do a deal on the carriage but don't say I told you his).

ta muchly for the info, i know of a car spares place that deals in silkolene i'll give them a shout about the XTR type. Get that recommended oil, all i gotta sort out now is a fair amount of vibration when its idling, think the top mounts on its way out, aint checked the gear end yet and the underneath, well as ya might know the weather is being on the deceptive side.

thanks again me duck, much appreciated :cheesy:

Just thought I'd add my tenners worth

I use the XTR in my mrs Polo and indeed it is lovely stuff, done 107,000 and the engine sounds sweet

I've moved over to Fuchs/Silko Supersyn 5/40 fully synthetic in my D8 V6. It's good stuff and the car has 112,000 on and sounds sweet as a nut. That really does sound like a good deal though 4 litres for £15.00, i'll be giving them a try!!

Recently put in 5W-30 Mobil1.

Engine revs up better, starting in both winter and spring conditions smoother.
Also less noise from the engine at higher speeds, esp. around 60 mph.

Fuel economy improved about 10% to approx. 6 miles/liter on LPG.

But oh-boy is this stuff expensive.

so it seems silkolene is quite popular amongst folk up to yet for engine oil preference, but i have noticed that the viscosity seems to stick to a close 5-30w to 5-40w. Must admit that the magnatec stuff done the trick with me old d8, but in the HPI it dont seem to be as smooth at all, just dont suit it, mobil or silkolene. I think silkolene XTR has got it for me, only for a cost thing, 15 quid for 4 liters as opposed to a good 30 for castrol, or ( KetsOne do put me right if im wrong on the price ) mobil. were bouts do you get this XTR oil ? does anyone know of stockists in the midlands or an online shop, i tried to get on that x-cite onlin shop by welton and i couldnt find it.

cheers for all ya help so far, nice to know that ya aint on ya own n there always someone to answer ya question, no matter what it is :cheesy: well 406 related anyway

This is where I get all my oil from, competitive prices and excellent service and delivery.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/

I'd use either the XTR or for around an extra eight quid you can have the 5/40 Super Syn which is as good if not better than Mobil.

Used to run my spanking new 205 1.9GTi on Mobil 1, rev to fuel cut out nice and smooth, but I heard that oil consumption goes up when using these high performance Mobil oils; I can certainly vouch for that in the 205 but not the 406HDi

thanks to you all for the oil recommendations, i ended up dropping some silkolene xtr 10/40 in t'pearl and a purolator filter in as well ( thanks for the link to opie oils livefats123 ) damn good service from em and well cheap as well, 1 ltr, 4ltr bottles of oil, purolator filter and p&p all in 30 quid, you wouldnt get a 4 ltr bottle of oil for that. Damn suprised at how quiet it runs now, ok for a tractor in drag its gonna rumble but when it aint in lean burn mode you cant hear it running i aint exaggerating either i was well and truly suprised, a bloody good feat to do considering how it used to sound ( ask dairees  . )
so appreciation all round :cheesy: up next, the sodding tie rod that goes from body to back wheel hub got itself a creak... theres always sumot aint they ? lol
