I HAVE A 1998 406 GLX TD AND HALFORDS SAY THAT FULLY SYNTHETIC IS BEST FOR CARS AFTER 1990..I HAVE NOW DONE A FULL OIL CHANGE WITH FILTER AND HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS YET BUT MECHANICS AT WORK RECKON THAT I SHOULD NOT USE FULLY SYNTHETIC..ANY VIEWS WOULD BE GOOD ESPECIALLY FROM ANY PEUGEOT MECHANICS

I´m not a Peug mechanic, but i can hold my own.
Recently did some research myself on oilchanges since my D9 was due for one.
Fully Synthetic or semi-synthetic is not very important. The ACEA classification and grade IS though!
ACEA specification
Check what type of oil is required by reading the users manual. Usually D8 (pre-199) peugs require minimum A3B3-spec oil. D9´s (after-1999) can require various types.
This classification tells you something about the specifications of the oil. You should never fillup with oil of different spec.
Grade
Tells you something on the general behaviour of the oil in summer and winter time. This is somewhat less important than the ACEA classification. However, be aware that oil that is too thick can cause trouble because it is not circulated well enough and too thin an oil will not lubricate parts that are far away from the oil pump/sump.
What i did
I own aD9 with a 1.8 L 16v XU7JP4 engine, which requires at least B3 oil. My dealer always refills with Total 10W-40 (which complies with the spec).
As i experienced some hiccups and raw running behavior i replaced this with Mobil1 5W-30. Notice that it has a different grade, but complies fully with the A3B3 spec.
