Hi guys, I'm new to this forum so bare with me... I've recently bought a p reg 406 turbo diesel lx and when I start her up first thing when she's cold, theres a blatting sound for the 1st few seconds coming from the back of the engine, un uneven idle and then it clears up and runs normally and sometimes she has to be started a second time... Could this be a bad gasket on one of the manifolds??? Thanks in advance for any advice given... Marc

Welcome Marc. When it does start how does it run? I'm thinking if it is a gasket it'd run badly all the time and you might hear some blowing. A couple of duff glowplugs maybe? Not sure about this "blatting" noise :?:

thanx steve... when I start, the blatting refered to sounds like she's got no exhaust, sometimes she dies first off and has to be restarted, but when she does fire up first off its like she's having trouble to idle and I've got to pump the accelerator to get her revs up and I didn't mention that she chucks out a load of black smoke from the exhaust when starting... like I said this happens when she's cold first thing. Thanks again...

Hm, I'd say it's the glow plugs.
