Hi fellas i have just been up to Scotland and back in my trusty R reg 2.1td (122K miles) and noticed it was whistling (i assume its the turbo) at between 2300 and 2800rpm in top.
I could make it whistle then make it dissapear again by loading the engine slightly by adjusting the pressure on the throttle pedal.
It returned 48mpg on the run up and when i booted it in 5th at about 75 it steadlity rose upto 90 (on the private bit of road i was on officer) with no discernable lack of oomph and an average amount of black smoke out the back.
My question is should i be unduly concerned about the whistling noise?
Is a whistling an early indication of turbo eruption!?
and lastly is it a complete twat to change the turbo on it?
It's a 2.1, of course you've got to remove the engine! (I think you have to remove the engine to empty the ashtray ) You should be able to hear your turbo, it's when you can't hear it you start to panic. When you say it smokes, how much? Mine's pretty loose by now but I never noticed a cloud chasing me down the road, what's your engine oil consumption like? There doesn't sound like there's anything wrong with your fuel consumption anyway.
Oil consumption is fine, needs maybe 250-500 ml between services. ( i assume thats fine?)
I only notice the smoke in the headlights behind me at night and it stays low to the road, it doesnt trail me down the road or waft about in the air, its not noticable in the daytime, well looking in the rear view mirror it aint.
Still sound normal?
I guess the 2.1td is a bit of a pain in the ass then when it comes to working on it?
I had visions of a very noticable cloud, but I think that sounds ok. Mine is given to the occasional puff too.
The 2.1 is indeed a pig to work on, but on the plus side it's a very good engine and should see you to intergallactic mileages with not much more than regular servicing and cam belt changes.

i sold mine with about 205k on the clock and i never had any trouble with it engine wise and i didnt really treat it the best , 20k between oil changes and only 1 cam belt change from new but it was the most reliable car i ever owned
just dip me in chocolate and throw me to the lesbians
Mine had exactly the same whine as you describe but at around 2.6k rpm. Your car sounds fine to me. Don't get rid of it, I miss mine like hell (I even dreamt about it last night )

I still dream about my job and I quit 4 years ago...

The nightmare that was my job, broken cars, idiotic drivers, communication problems, houses, gardens, plants... No bluddy sex, I'm too tired even to dream about it!
Had a problem with my 2.1 making more noise than usual and some lack of boost. It was the turbo hose that had started to crack, its the one that goes from the turbo under the car to the cooler. It had split around the collar and was blowing easy fix though!!
