i have a 2ltr petrol 406 on a "P", plate (1996 i think), for the past couple of months whenever i reach around 2100 rpm (40mph in fourth, 50 mph in fifth) there is a distinct growl coming from somewhere in the drivers side footwell of the engine. I have taken it to a garage and they can find nothing wrong, i dont think its bearing related as this would surely growl all the time. Please help any advice would be great!!

Top engine mounts crap out on these - it might have led to a resonnance noise at certain revs?

Also cambelt tensioner wheels/idlers possibly

Auxillary belt and tensioner maybe.

Difficult to say without hearing it :|

Welcome :)

It could be stacks of things, does it not do it just reving the engine? As Welton says, it's very difficult without actually hearing it, though even then it might not be easy.

Most likely the top engine mount.
My old saloon would let off a groan or roar around 2000 to 2200 revs. Started doing it with about 188K on the clock.
