Could an intercooler be added to a non intercooled engine?

Well i know it could be but what would be the concequences?

Is a TDi engine just an older TD with an intercooler stuck on it?

Or is there more to it than that in terms of designing the engine to take into account certain compression ratios and a denser intercooled combustion mix?

Just had me wondering thats all.

If you bolted on an intercooler you would have to address the fueling to see any benefits from it.

The performance of a Diesel is dictated by how much fuel is burnt. The intercooler limits the intake temperature to provide as much oxygen as possible. The turbo forces in more combustion air on the piston's downward stroke which is fine but it needs fuel to get the most from that extra air. This is all taken care of by the fuel MAP.
