Starting gremlin 1.9 turbo diesel 97

Post by ko324 »

Was really chuffed when my cheap purchase (£400) cruised through its MOT.
But now though its never failed to start eventually....
Leave car for any length of time and fuel line seems to develop an airlock ( i have to hand prime the fuel system).
But like i say sometimes i can leave it all night and it will kick up 1st flick of the key.
I have heard a relay making n breakin upon trying to start it after ive squeezed my bulb so to speak so this could be related!!!
Any ideas most appreciated

the relay could be for the heater plugs, take a good look at the fuel return pipes
on the injectors to see if there are any leaks or dampness and change them they
only cost a few pounds :)
.. ooh are those drugs for me Matron

You could put a non return valve in the fuel line just before the fuel pump. I had the same problem, although the valve didn't help in any way it did rule out that potential problem. You may also want to look at the glow plugs to see if they are all working as they should, also check that your fuel filter has been changed recently. It's widely acknowledged that the 1.9td is a 'hot' engine, in other words it needs plenty of heat to get it going (unlike the 1.8td). I used to let the glow plug go out and then wait until a click was heard from the relay in the engine bay before the car would start, it would always start using this method. The later 2ltr Hdi is like a petrol engine in that aspect, flick the key and the engine starts instantly without any pre-warming.

Hi guys n gals.... after much consternation... and noting the way it behaves ( it'll start all week then just not start for a few attempts... yeh sure on these occasions i manually lift the fuel by hand priming... but i can hand prime and still get nothing } I've decided to go for replacing the stop solenoid  .

Anyone any idea of best place to get hold of one? Ive seen em on ebay pretty cheap but unsure of compatibility (its a 1.9 runnin a bosch pump)

Once i've fitted it i'l let you know how i get on... if my diagnosis has been correct! Im hoping :cheesy:
