hi there
please help
last couple of days my 406 (x reg 2.0) hdi will turn over but not fire. if i then bump start it, it will run all day without fault.
turn the ignition off, it will again turn over but not fire. bump start it drives perfectly
do i assume not battery, not ecu, not immobilizer?
any assistance would be greatly appreciated, i love my 406!

With it being the hdi ild say its going to be likley that somethings rotten in the electrics or the low pressure pump (a very common fault i have now found out >.<)
Also have you tired taking up the rear seats and lisenting to the low pressure fuel pump when u try to turn it over (it it makes loads of noise or wirring its on the way out £175 from pug for a new one oh and if u can get the plate off, mine was rivvitted so i couldnt check in the pump for any metal parts or bits of copper filings- another sign the pumps on the way out

)
get a mechanic to look at it ( not a pug one they over charge to hell and know jack sh*t)
(roll on fault dianostics at nvq lv 3 next year

)

It could very well be the low pressure pump on a car that reg, when you
bump start it the jolt could be enough to get it working again.
The next time it happens lift up the rear passenger seat, drivers side,
you will see the pump try tapping it then see if it will start, if it does
get one asap mine was £125/130 from main stealers

i will try that thanks to you both.
it just seemed strange to me that it would bump start ok, thought this would discount any possible fuel problems
are you saying that it could still be the in-tank fuel pump?
i have read a few forums to try and sort out this problem
is there anything to be gained by filling the fuel tank at least halfway?
many thanks

If you can afford it

Maybe it's not got enough strength left to suck it up from the bottom 'til it's getting the full wack from the alternator

are the in-tank fuel pumps easy to change?
is there anything i should watch out for, when removing/replacing?

intank pump seems to be working fine
a friend said it could be glowplugs, is there a check ican do on them, or is it a case of replacing them and taking it from there
would car bump start though if glow plugs were on way out?
i am determined to get to the bottom of this!

Genral thoughts are that the HDi's aren't really dependent on the glow plugs for cold starting. They generally dont need alot of heat for them to start. if it was glow plugs would expect 1 or 2 faulty ones leading to rough running when very cold.
Not in this kind of weather thou and bump starting would probably suffer the same problem.
Whats the battery like? does it turn it over fairly quickly? by bump start do mean a push start or jump start?
Does it start ok if jump start? if so may be knackered or too weak battery.

had a battery check done, comes out fine, turns over really quickly
i live on a hill, if i roll it down, without 10 feet it fires no problem and runs all day, not lumpy at all
if i drive 2 hours, then turn the ignition off, it will not start again
checked under rear seat, in tank pump really quiet, no nasty noises, seems to be operating properly when you turn key

So, what's different when you turn the key to start? I can't think of anything on a diesel, I'm starting to wonder about the ignition switch...

WHERE IS THE IGINITION SWITCH?
IS IT EASY TO CHANGE, IS THERE A CHECK FOR IT, TO TEST IT IS WORKING?

Well, it's actually behind the steering lock barrel

What you need to do is find the feed for the engine ECU and make sure it's still there when you crank the engine. Haynes says it's fuse 6 on the passenger fuse box, which probably means it's not fuse 6...
Btw the caps lock key is in the middle of the keys on the left of your keyboard.

took it to peugeot today, i need it for a holiday to france next week
turns out it needs 2 injectors!
can you recon them?
is there anywhere you can get reasonably priced injectors?
