I think its comes off the rear anti-roll bar somewhere in the middle. I think theres a small bracket coming off the anti-roll bar and spring between this and the load sensor (which adjust the rear brake bias dependant on weight you have in the back).

Wouldn't expect it to be too had to change, but you never know

I thought the brake lines all went straight up to the ABS unit in the engine bay?

I am going from very faint memory after reading the haynes book of lies over 6 months ago. (After i thought i felt different front/back brake bias on the 406, so wanted to check where/what it could be.)

From memory the brake lines come down the lower suspension arms (at some point anyway), so probably joining somewhere near the middle. I d guess they go in to the load sensor and up to the abs pump.

Pretty certain the load sensor is controlled off the anti roll bar. Would expect somewhere round the middle but being a french car could be anywhere!

I think you're going to have to find said device and see if the spring can be renewed. There's a tiny little picture but I can't make much out, most of the text deals with removing the valve (bleedin' brakes again), the last paragraph just says "unhook the valve spring". If you can get the spring off you'll have to see if you can get another one without having to buy the whole damn thing.

The spring looks fairly accessible on my 97 estate, I dont have abs so I`m assuming you dont either as it wouldnt be there if the car had abs?
I would have a look around my local car breakers in the first instance armed with some decent pliers etc. It is as suggested above hooked up to a bracket on the rear antiroll bar almost dead centre. I dont think you would need specialist equipment to change a small spring... unless pliers are classed as such :p

Best place to find our if the spring comes seperatly would be service box. haynes only talks about removing the whole thing so not sure how easy it would be to just replace the spring.

if its like the 405 its not replacable on its own. it comes as part of the valve assembly.
