my 2002 2.0 hdi 90 406 is on 86k miles and even though the timing belt is still good till 96k miles i want to get it changed this summer to be on the safe side - ive heard if they break it can be nasty!
Ive not rung around for quotes yet but im interested to find out off other 406 owners how much they paid to get it done so ive got something to aim around
cheers

Re: hdi 90 timing belt change cost
Funnily enough it's such a huge interval that I don't think many of us can report on it's recent cost
I would budget £200-300 at a decent independant garage and make sure you have a Cambelt "kit" fitted. Also get the water pump changed whilst they're down there as these can leak.
Actually, in the majority of cases, when the belt snaps it's not all bad news
there is a sacrificial part on the camshaft (a bearing cap) that snaps and allows the valve(s) to pass without bending. Another bonus appears to be that most cambelts snap on start up or at low speed for some reason so much less damage. Not that I would recommend skipping the belt change though.

Depends how the belt goes. When my fan belt failed and caused the cam belt to slip it did a number of valve's. But because t was fan belt failure i was doing over about 2000 rpm at the time. The repair was expensive, if i thought it was cam belt i wouldn't have even bother with the repair but was too far down the road to not fix it.Welton wrote:Actually, in the majority of cases, when the belt snaps it's not all bad newsthere is a sacrificial part on the camshaft (a bearing cap) that snaps and allows the valve(s) to pass without bending. I think when i had my cambelt kit and water pump (includes a coolant change) done it cost me about £300 but that was about 3 years ago. Also get them to have a good luck at the crankshaft pulley while it is off the car as these are known to fail.

Ah - I forgot about your's
I suppose a break in the cambelt is more sudden than a slippage, the slippage being much worse and sharing the dissaster along the valve train as it continues to turn the camshaft.
