Hi guys n gals,
How are you lot doing lately?
I had to take my beloved 406 off the road after I bought a yacht, so I could spend a wee bit of cash on the yacht before the summer. Well, the yacht is now in the water, and im ready for getting the 406 back onto the road. Ive just bought new link bars for the rear suspension, new front disks and a new exhaust, and im ready to fit them on. During my MOT check, I took the car for a wee run (sorry officer!!), and found out that it is DEAD. It feels that there is little or no boost. I have been told to check the waste-gate and see if its stuck. How and where help required please guys. :?:

I wouldn't know where to start! I'm not sure if diesel dies like petrol does, 6 months isn't too long anyway.

Since I've been eating these here prunes I've been pretty regular :?

I dunno really. I think if it was me I'd persevere with it and keep driving it hoping it will spring back to life :oops:

You could try *carefully* dabbing/wiping the air flow meter sensor wires/capsules inside and see if that helps. Supafrisk has an 02 reg the same and has just had to replace the AFM due to this dead power thing.

I suppose the wastegate could be stuck open - you could always get it up on stands and try to work the actuator rod in and out?

Is the battery in good condition? I'm sure I've read somewhere that if the voltage is a bit sque-whiff then the ECU panics about it.

Hello, I left my D9 HDI for 6 months in the garage while I was in the USA. I left it with the battery disconnected. When I got back I was a bit scared to just start her up so I did an oil change 1st and while I was doing that I checked the air filter. I've got one of those K&N panels in there and that was ok. However on my D8 I checked the air filter and it was all kind of mouldy and soft. As if condensation had made it like that. I think that happened because I left that on the drive. Try changing the air filter and also try putting in some of that injector cleaner stuff.. that might help

Hi all, its still not running right.
The flap on the wastegate moves freely, but I now suspect the diaphragm unit that operates the flap. problem is, its a nightmare to get access to.
The car is up for its MOT on Wednesday, but it is driving, so should pass ok. (fingers crossed etc etc.....!)
Im doing a code check tomorrow night after work.
I can drive it up to 3600 in third gear, and all of a sudden it begins to drive normally again, and goes up through the gears great, but let the revs come back down again and the story is the same. It pootles around town ok though, just down on power. There is no difference between touching the throttle gently and full throttle.
I also had the battery disconnected for months if that means anything to you lot??

how far have you driven it ????
does anyone know if the hdi ecu doest the same thing as on the 206's i heard from a customer that his 206 was parked up for a while when he was away with no battery on it when he got back and put the battery back on it was a similar thing no go unless he battered the daylights outta it
he spoke to a local pug specialist ( its merseyside specialist just means he knows how to work round the imobiliser in less than 15 seconds with the "bizzy's" chasing him" wh told him to take the car on an outing for atleast an hour this way the ecu learnt all the engine parramiters again
this lad drove it for 2 hrs in various traffic conditions and that cured the fault

of course if the hdi ecu doesn't do this then i am talking crap lol :oops: :oops:

Ive only driven it for 20 miles, or 30 mins. MOT is tomorrow, so I can drive it farther then. Hope something as simple as that will cure the problem.

Yurst - 'adaptives' it's called I think :frown: You need to drive round a fair bit 40 mins or so, no need to thrash the nuts off it. If that's what it is then response will improve fairly gradually.

After having the clutch done the other week (battery was disconnected for a couple of days) my old girl was even more sluggish than usual. Few hundred miles later and she's back to normal.
52 HDI(90) 406 saloon. Sadly no longer owned, bless her she got near 200,000 miles and I had to sell her on, she was still going strong.

I was surprised at the incredible blast of hot air the HDi produces when revved from idle :shock: if it's a bit weedy then it could be partially blocked? sometimes CAT cores come away and frustrate the flow so to speak.

Hi all,
The car passed its MOT!!
It is still driving the same after driving for 170 miles so far. Getting home tonight will take it over the 200 mile mark.
Is it possible for someone to take their wastegate vacuum pipe off from the bottom of the valve, and suck on it please. It should make a small clunking noise as the vacuum is released. This is the wastegate closing under spring pressure. Mine doesnt clunk when the pressure is released, which leads me back to this diaphragm being stuck again.
Im waiting on a haynes manual to get here. How does one get access to the wastegate actuator? I can barely see the wastegate lever from under the car with the bottom intercooler hose removed, let alone get access to remove the diaphragm unit. Bloody pugs and their canted back engines! Thank christ its a 406 and not a 206!!!

Also, what is the type of fault code reader required? Ive tried 2x different OBD2 readers, but it cant connect for some reason????

Sorry to bring up and old post, but it's one which is relevant to my car I feel, (in a roundabout way)!

Firstly, mine I feel has very poor MPG. (29 at the moment now). Could this be to do with a blocked cat? I had a FAP filter warning light come up for about 20 seconds when driving home the toher day, and Ive read/been told that this can be a costly problem but no-one actually seems to know what is/does. Some sort of fluid? Would somebody be kind enough to explain it for me :) and if this could be a problem??

You said there is a vibration when you let off the throttle, would the vibration also occur slighlty when you accelrate or is that another problem?

My car was also sat around approx 3 months but Ive done over 400 miles with it and nothing seems to have improved.

Again, any help or info you guys can give me would be appreciated.

FAP filter takes out the soot from the engine and keeps the exhaust nice and clean. It's used in conjunction with a separated fluid tank which injects a quantity each time the fuel filler is opened. If the tank is empty (often around 60-80k miles you will need the main dealer to refill the system and set the counter (£90ish). It may be that you will also need a new FAP filter (£150-300).
