i read somewhere that if the bottom pully squeaks when the engine is cold and stops when warm that the pully is close to failing??
well mine is squeaking
the pully in question has been changed once so i am reluctant to change it again, but if its got to be done then its got to be done.
anyone know????

Normally it's the Aux belt itself that squeeks - try changing that first!

They generally rattle when they're on their way out, maybe the belt's perrished and sqeeling until it gets warm. See if you can get a look at the pulley while you're there, they seem to start falling apart.
A thread.

Well my pulley is not rattling but it is not running true.
Should I worry yet or wait for more signs of impending death?

If it's not straight then it could be putting a lot of stress on everything else. Why isn't it straight? What could be bent?? Definitely requires further investigation!

When the bottom pulley was on its way out with me, there was a sort of clicking noise coming from the bottom of the left hand side of the engine.

if you suspect its duff get it checked.
failed fan belt can be very nasty (i know!) and if the pulley goes fully likely to do the same or more damage.

Did the garage fit the pulley right when it was changed in the first place?

If it's any help I've got a brand new Genuine Pug bottom pulley (£125.00) and when rotating I would hardly call it smooth or true

it seems to look like it's wobbling!

If you suspect the Lower pulley you can take off the under arch panel and get a good look at it - if there are signs of brown dust spreading out it on the way out.
It usually rattles rather than squeals as welly said. If it is the belt squealing take a look at the self adjuster to make sure it is applying the pressure ok. These multi ribbed belts rarely squeal, but who knows there's always the exception and may be something new - it's French.

When everyone refers to the bottom pulley, is this the same as the Crankshaft pulley? As in the pulley that turns and pulls the auxiluary belt etc?
I have a feeling mine is in similar situation of failure, as it is rattling alot, although nothing seems loose. The rattle is coming from the offside (right hand side if driver, left had side if bonnet is open and you are looking in)
Is it just a case of putting it in gear (so there is no movement of the crank) locking the aux belt tensioner taking off the belt, swapping the crankshaft pulleys round and then putting it all back together?
Or is it a totally different pulley all together?
£49.50 from GSF
What are the consequences of the pulley failing. Would it just mess up the auxiliary system or other things aswell?
