On my 306 i had this problem and it was worn out glow plugs. Untill i could afford to replace them i use to turn ignition wait for glow plug light to go out do this around 3 to 4 times then the car should fire straight up

.

I doubt that would be the problem as the old xud diesel engines once primed via pumping the hand primer after changing the filter would never cause any problems after the car had been run.

that wasn't quite what i was getting at i don't know if it happens much on the 406 but a mate who had a citroen zx 19td had a starting prob every morning it just wouldn't start he could sit there for ages winding it over then eventually it would kick into life but run like a bag 'o' shi!e for 5-10 mins
anyway cutting the long and painfull story down after changing everything he could and taking it to several garages a guy in the pub told him to replace the diesel spill off pipes on the injectors as they where prob perished and letting air in he did this and cured the problem total cost was about £5 plus a couple of beers
just sounded like a similar problem

Interesting never heard of that before. Very good point. You learn something new everyday

Could be air in the fuel lines, which would be a similar symptom to worn spill lines/worn primer pump
